.2002 FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD

Photos by Judy Boulet courtesy of Fox Studios.

A full-size animatronic HMS Surprise is mounted on gimbals in the oceanside tank at Fox's Baja studio. This is the same tank where much of Titanic was shot. The Rose doubled for the Surprise at sea.

In these images, the 4-oar cutter is the boat on the right, and the 6-oar launch is at center. These boats are Russian Navy yawls and are now part of Boat Base Monterey. The cutter was formerly with the Admiral Nevel'skoi Maritime Academy (Vladivostok).
The launch was formerly with the Naval Engineering Institute (St. Petersburg).
The gig at the left formerly served as quarter boat for the Nautical Heritage Society's Californian.

The images are reminiscent of Geoff Hunt's cover paintings for the Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey / Maturin novels.
