Monterey's Official Historic Naval Ship's
Boats are two Russian Navy six-oared yawl boats that were loaned
by the Russian Navy's Engineering Institute to commemorate the
300th anniversary of the Russian Navy and the 150th Anniversary
of California's Statehood in 1996. They comprise Boat Base Monterey
of the Naval Engineering Institute, inaugurated in 1996 to promote
historic programs that encourage awareness of the Russian Navy's
contribution to California's history. The boats were recognized
in 1998 by the City of Monterey, which proclaimed them Monterey's
Official Historic Naval Ship's Boats. The boats have been used with educational programs for local schools, educational films, and a Dreamworks production, conducted a joint expedition up the Sacramento river with the Russian Navy and U.S.Navy Sea Cadets, and have been used in programs with the Monterey Maritime Museum that taught traditional rowing, sailing, navigation, and marlinspike seamanship skills within the context of California's maritime history. Boat Base Monterey is administered by a Lieutenant, a Warrant Officer, and two acting Warrant Officers appointed by the Russian Naval Engineering Institute to promote, care for, and maintain the two six-oared yawls. In addition, the following local sponsors have donated substantial support to provide this community service to the Monterey Peninsula: |
