True Grit
has style.
Only the Coen brothers could pull off this
remake of the 1969 John Wayne version, which won him his only
Oscar.
It looks like the brothers are having a
ball playing with cowboys. And when the violence hits, it hits
hard.
This a pure bread and butter western with
a big kick, and the Coen brothers know just how to make films
you want to see again. |
John Wayne may be spinning in his grave.
However, the Coen brothers have turned
out a film that is not only better than the original, but also
truer to the book.
Beautifully photographed, with a fine ensemble
cast, the story of a young girl's nearly maniacal determination
to find her father's killer has both quirky humor and sudden
violence.
It's not a remake as such, but more of
a redo with style. |
It's hard to visualize a mental picture
of bigger boots to fill than the ones that earned John Wayne
his Oscar in the classic True Grit, and yet actor Jeff
Bridges makes the part his own and skillfully reinvents the Duke's
role of Rooster Cogburn in the Coen brothers' back-to-the-book
2010 remake.
This is a tale of vengeance in the old
west.
The performances are good overall, with
several star actors easily surpassing the work of their predecessors.
The directors have fashioned one of the
best westerns in recent years -- a new look of a classic that
never feels like it goes beyond what is necessary. |
