The
Eagle is an old-fashioned period sword fighting film about going
behind enemy lines to recover a bronze eagle (stolen from the
Roman-occupied Britain's Ninth Legion).
There's a powerful relationship that grows with two sworn enemies --
one a slave, the other a Roman soldier -- who depend on each other for
survival.
It's an okay, reasonably entertaining film in its own right.

The story of
Hadrian's Wall and the lost Ninth Battalion is a story that is
compelling and well worth telling.
However,
with no chemistry, quick-cut action sequences, and filmed as dark as
possible, this quest to retrieve Rome's missing symbol beyond that
fortification evokes feelings of weariness, distrust, and frankly
boredom.
It's
a good story with a bad script, told poorly.

The movie is an action-filled Roman
historical adventure about a brave, heroic soldier and his slave who go
looking in the mountains of Scotland for a Roman emblem known as the
Eagle of the Ninth Legion.
I thought this film was an above-average ancient rough and rugged
action tale involving swords and sandals and savage tribes in combat.
In my view, the whole production, including acting, is put
together in a good-old-fashioned way, with a satisfying
buddy-bonding conclusion.
