A young lady singer arrives in Hollywood
looking for fame, but desperate for a job she approaches the
owner of a burlesque club -- Tess, played by Cher -- who brushes
her off, being depressed from the worry of losing the theater
due to financial woes.
The film doesn't try to be more than a
musical with catchy tunes, flashy costumes, and eye candy for
both men and women.
So be willing to sit back and enjoy the
show for what it is. |
It's Coyote Ugly meets Cabaret,
as a young girl from Iowa hits the mean streets of Hollywood
in order to sing and dance her heart out.
It's standard mush about unsung singers
lurking in the recesses of our nation, hoping to shout out their
presence and at the same time prove their loyalty by helping
to secure the mortgage for a club no one has ever heard of.
An interesting cast is wasted as background
decor while the film spins its wheels restating the obvious. |
The movie is a sequin-studded musical about
an L.A. burlesque club.
The flick plays like a humorous imitation
or parody of those country girl makes good in the big city dramas.
The film features a mix of old and new
songs, and I enjoyed the musical numbers, which are very generously
set up and staged.
The two lead stars, Cher and Christina
Aguilera, can belt out a song with the best of them. |
